Volvo is a Swedish automobile manufacturer that was founded in 1927. The auto maker is well known for its luxury passenger and commercial transport vehicles. In 1999, the company was wholly acquired by the Ford Motor Company and then in 2009 announced the sale of Volvo to Chinese auto manufacturer “Geely”.

The name Volvo was chosen for its meaning in Latin, "we go".
The Volvo Cars logo, a circle and diagonal arrow, is a chemistry symbol for iron.
The Volvo signature grill features a diagonal line that was designed to hold this logo.

Saab was founded in 1937 to utilise surplus engineering expertise and manufacturing capacity from the military aircraft that it had been making. Based in Trollhattan, Sweden, the first Saab automobile (the 92001) was produced 10 June 1947. General Motors took control of Saab in 1990 and it became one of the two smallest brands in the GM family, the other being Australia’s Holden. Saab was sold to the Dutch company Spyker Cars in 2010.

Saab is an anagram for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget.
This aeronautical background is shown in the styling cues in the cars (eg. ignition key between the front seats, aerodynamics etc).
Saab merged with Scania in 1968 which opened access to the Scania engine production facilities and turbocharging technology.
